Medical editing & proofreading

Clear. Consistent. Complete.

At MediComm, editing means keeping the reader front of mind. What do they need to know? Is the content easy to understand without being patronising? Are there inconsistencies which will distract or confuse? Is there any extra value we can add?

What is the medical copy-editor’s role?

  • “To tighten a manuscript’s rambling prose;
  • smooth awkward transitions;
  • suggest more appropriate wording;
  • restructure disorganized information;
  • query the writer for additional information or clarification;
  • ensure a consistent style;
  • add headings, subheadings or captions;
  • and, in some instances, suggest completely rewriting sections”

Beene L. Most bang for the buck.
An editor’s workbook. 2009.

  • To ensure that both the copy and its referencing comply with regulatory, publication or other guidelines in terms of content, format and structure
  • To amend language that may perpetuate inequality in healthcare or in wider society
  • To look for opportunities to make the content more accessible to the growing number of people who choose to listen to their content instead of reading it
  • To stay up to date with global medical-communication trends
  • To perform multiple quality-assurance tasks in support of the copywriters, so that they can focus on the message and creativity without being sidetracked by formatting details

What is the proofreader’s role?

To check that the content of a designed document is error-free and properly formatted before it’s printed or published

CPD/CME writing

We bring our signature storytelling skills to our CPD and CME writing.

Trained in advanced medical writing for CPD (continuing professional development) and CME (continuing medical education), Kirsty has written over 40 CPD articles in the past five years. Katie has developed the concept of short, sharp ‘coffee-break’ CPDs for busy practitioners and our editing team ensures that essential information is explained in an interactive and engaging way.

Together we aim to change the face of CPDs in South Africa (and elsewhere) so that every CPD ultimately leads to improved practitioner knowledge and better patient outcomes.

Long- and short-form CPDs, videos, quizzes, slide shows, webinars, gamification – MediComm CPDs are interesting and effective. We also understand how important CPD questions are, so we devise scenario-based and clinically appropriate multiple-choice questions instead of ‘tick-box’ questions.

Our editing team is trained in working with ethics committees to obtain CPD accreditation.

As most CPDs are protected intellectual property, most portfolio pieces are only available upon request and with permission.

Writing for medical journals

So many medical practitioners and organisations have important insights, research and information to share but can’t find the time to publish.

To help you communicate your important ideas to your peers, MediComm can:

STEP 1

Do the homework on your chosen journal's
writing, editing & publication requirements

STEP 4

Guide you through the submission process

STEP 2

Conduct a review of the literature on your topic
& write a succinct summary

STEP 5

Work with you to finalise the article once journal
feedback is received

STEP 3

Use your information & data to craft an article
that meets your chosen journal's standards

Medical training material

Do you need to train healthcare practitioners, medical representatives, patients or consumers on medical products, devices or topics?

We love creating training material in any format. It’s as simple as that. With staff who have backgrounds in teaching and lecturing, this is one of our sweet spots. Whether it’s online, workshop-based or videos, notes, manuals or quizzes, we strive to make your training interactive, effective, interesting and appropriate for your audience.

MediComm’s training material is accessible and easy to use because we want new information to be retained and behaviour to change: better product sales, better patient interaction, better clinical outcomes.

Tell us what and who you need to teach – we’ll be buzzing with ideas on how best to do it.

The MediComm team has written scripts and storyboard suggestions for over 50 videos, including:

  • Launch videos
  • Explainer videos
  • Training videos
  • Emotive/support videos

Depending on what works best for the story you want to tell, MediComm will create a voice-over script, on-screen text or a combination of both.

As medical videos include protected intellectual property, examples are available upon request and with permission.
